The UFC’s return to Melbourne, Australia on November 27 has its headlining bout between Middleweight contenders Luke Rockhold and Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza, per an announcement from the promotion on Sunday.

The first event in Melbourne was the famed UFC 193 where former Women’s Bantamweight champion Holly Holm defeated Ronda Rousey for the belt in one of the biggest upsets in MMA history. Strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk defended her belt against Valerie Letourneau in the co-main event.  The inaugural event was the Etihad Stadium which holds 55,000+ people, UFC Fight Night 101 will be at the Rod Laver Arena and will likely be during the night time the day before in the United States.

Rockhold lost his Middleweight belt at UFC 199 in a rematch to Michael Bisping. Their first fight happened at Fight Night 55 in Sydney, Australia. Rockhold won the belt at UFC 194 when he beat former champion Chris Weidman by fourth-round TKO. The rematch between Rockhold and Bisping came about when the rematch between Rockhold and Weidman was scrapped due to Weidman pulling out of the event.

Jacare is a winner of 9 of his last 10. After 8 straight wins, 5 in the UFC, a number-one contender bout was made between Yoel Romero and him at UFC 194. The bout was close until a takedown was defended by Romero holding onto the fence and helped Romero get a takedown of his own. Jacare lost the fight by decision for his first loss in three years. Souza returned at UFC 198 in Curitiba, Brazil where he defeated former Light Heavyweight champion Vitor Belfort by first-round TKO. He was the Strikeforce Middleweight champion after he beat Tim Kennedy. He defeated Robbie Lawler for a title defense four months later with a third-round Rear-Naked choke.

Rockhold defeated Souza in 2011 for the Strikeforce Middleweight title. Rockhold defended the belt two times (Keith Jardine and Tim Kennedy) before the merger with the UFC in 2013.

Stay tuned for other fight announcements on this card as they become available.

Bellator 185- How to Watch, Times and Fight Card

Published

on

Bellator is once again heading to Mohegan Sun in Uncasville Connecticut, and this time they are bringing with them one of the most anticipated former UFC fighter turned Bellator stars’ debut. Gegard Mousasi will be making his first appearance in the Bellator cage against a former Bellator champion in Alexander Shlemenko. Although this event has lost some of its star power over the last several weeks, it is still stacked and you can bet that the main event will bring some fireworks.

Earlier in the month, it was announced that King Mo had suffered an injury that had forced him out of his co-main event fight with former middleweight champion Liam McGeary. Bellator worked quickly to secure a replacement opponent for McGeary in Bubba McDaniels. Unfortunately for McDaniels and the fans alike, McGeary had later suffered an injury of his own and the fight was removed from the card.

This left a spot open in the co-main event slot, which would be filled by a welterweight matchup between Brennan Ward and David Rickels. Just four days out from the fight, Bellator announced that Ward had also become injured and the fight has been removed from the card as well. The main card has been shuffled around and the welterweight bout between Neiman Gracie and Zak Bucia will now serve as the co-main event.
