Robbie Lawler vs. Tyron Woodley set for UFC 201

Update 5/17/16: The venue for UFC 201 is the Philips Arena in Atlanta, Georgia, home of the NBA’s Atlanta Hawks as reported by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Taking place on July 30, 2016, the main event will indeed be Tyron Woodley taking on Robbie Lawler for the UFC Welterweight Championship. Tickets for the event will go on sale June 10, 2016.

It appears Dana White and the UFC have kept their promise to Tyron Woodley, who was told he would receive a title shot back in October of 2015 at UFC 192, after his opponent for that event, Johny Hendricks, had complications with his weight cut and had to pull out of the fight. Since that incident, Woodley has yet to step into the cage, holding out for the title shot he was promised. We last saw Woodley compete over a year ago when he faced Kelvin Gastelum at UFC 183 on January 31, 2015. Woodley would emerge victorious by way of a split decision, taking his win streak to two, after defeating Dong Hyun Kim previously by first-round TKO. As the time passed and other welterweights have made their case for a title shot, for example, Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson, the patience of Woodley has paid off in a huge way as he will find himself sharing the cage with the champ in July, in his first fight during the Reebok era.

Robbie Lawler has been on an impressive run as the UFC Welterweight Champion, finding himself in consecutive fight of the year candidates an absolute war in the cage with Carlos Condit at UFC 195, and the Dana-White-dubbed “fight of the ever” against Rory MacDonald at UFC 189. Riding a five-fight win streak after a loss to Johny Hendricks in 2014, Lawler has been on a tear, defending his title twice after taking the belt from the aforementioned Hendricks at UFC  181. His last four fights have extended into the fifth and final round, where he seems to excel, earning himself the moniker “Fifth Round Lawler”. The 34-year old Lawler finds himself facing off against another American Top Team fighter in Woodley, although they have not been training partners at the Florida-based mega gym.

UFC 201 is scheduled to take place on July 30, 2016, in Atlanta, Georgia, with the venue to still be determined.
