UFC Fight Night 80 Co Main Event Round by Round Review – Michael Chiesa vs Jim Miller
The UFC began its weekend long festival of fights on Thursday night UFC Fight Night Las Vegas did not disappoint. On a night filled with exciting finishes Michael Chiesa came out on top in an extremely enjoyable fight with seasoned veteran Jim Miller. “The Maverick” remained calm during a tough first stanza to come back strong and end the fight early in the second round via a rear naked choke.
The first round began with both fighters meeting in the centre of the octagon. Initially both competitors looked tentative in the striking exchanges until Chiesa landed an uppercut that rang Jim Miller’s bell. He responded with a combination of his own connecting with a hard hook followed by a kick to the body. Chiesa decided to initiate the clinch and soon secured a body lock and took the fight to the mat. Staying heavy on top Chiesa used excellent shoulder pressure to secure the half guard position and looked to land strikes from there. Miller deflected most of the attempted elbows and repeatedly attempted to create space using his right knee as a frame to get back to his feet. After initially being unsuccessful in his attempt, the jiu jitsu black belt rolled for a kneebar. He could not secure the submission and soon faced the threat of a triangle attempt from Chiesa in the midst of another crazy scramble. Posturing up and defending beautifully Miller transitioned and managed to take the back of Chiesa. He immediately slapped on the body triangle and went to work securing the choke. Unfortunately for him, Chiesa correctly defended the hands first before trying to escape the body lock. The round ended with Miller unable to sink in the rear naked choke.
Almost immediately Miller landed a hard inside leg kick looking to capitalise on the momentum he had gained from round one. Chiesa intelligently began to feint and use his range as he found the mark with a stiff one two combination that backed up his opponent. Switching up his point of attack Chiesa ducked in and executed a deep single leg takedown dragging Miller back to the mat. Miller worked to retrieve full guard only for Chiesa to posture up and drop a hard elbow. Miller exhibited his excellent grappling skills tying his larger opponent up with his use of the rubber guard possibly looking to set up a triangle choke. Chiesa remained poised however, never relinquishing his pressure on top and using this to land multiple strikes. Chiesa attempted to pass the guard of Miller and astonishingly Miller rolled for another leg lock and this time it looked like he had the submission nailed down only for Chiesa to calmly defend and land hard hammer fists to the head that stunned the New Jersey native. Chiesa used Miller’s brief lapse in concentration to advance to the mount position and continued to rain down more punches in the process. Patient and poised, Chiesa calmly waited for Miller to try to escape but he could only give up his back and from this position “The Maverick” made him pay sinking in the rear naked choke to finish the fight. With the win Chiesa moves forward and sets his sights on the lightweight divisions top ten.
