UFC Fight Night Saskatoon: Fight to Watch

Griffin Tobey

The UFC returns to Canada this Sunday with a card that is headlined by a featherweight battle between Max Holloway and Charles Oliveira. It is sure to be an exciting bout, as well as a very exciting event. This is the MMALATESTNEWS Fight to Watch for UFC Fight Night: Saskatoon.

HONORABLE MENTION 1: Chris Kelades vs. Chris Beal
Chris “The Real Deal” Beal was a fighter on season 18 of The Ultimate Fighter. While on the show, he participated on Team Rousey. Beal suffered a hand injury while on the show, and was immediately picked to fight Team Tate’s team standout, Chris Holdsworth. Holdsworth defeated Beal, and Beal was eliminated from the show, while Holdsworth eventually won the entire show. After the show, Beal won a fight in the organization BAMMA, then was signed by the UFC. He recorded two victories to open up his UFC career, then made the decision to drop to the flyweight division. Beal was expected to be only a couple wins away from working his way to fight Demetrious Johnson when he dropped to flyweight. That dream was derailed when he lost to Neil Seery in his flyweight debut back in January. He looks to bounce back when he faces Chris “The Greek Assassin” this weekend.

Kelades made his UFC debut on short notice when he defeated Patrick Holohan via Unanimous Decision. He then followed that up by being utterly dominated Ray Borg. It is a battle between two very talented Flyweights who are looking to bounce back into title contention with a victory.

HONORABLE MENTION 2: Maryna Moroz vs. Valerie Letourneau
Two strawweights clash on the first bout of the Main Event when Maryna Moroz takes on Valerie Letourneau. Moroz made an immediate statement in her UFC debut when she entered as a huge underdog and defeated high profile strawweight Joanne Calderwood by submission a minute and thirty seconds into the first round. Moroz then called out champion Joanna Jędrzejczyk which earned her quite a bit of notoriety among the MMA community. She instead drew Letourneau, a talented fighter in her own right, and accepted the challenge. Should she defeat Létourneau, she may find herself closer to facing the fighter that she called out after her first fight. Her opponent, however, does not want that to happen as she has title ambitions of her own.

Letourneau is on a 3 fight win streak, her only losses in her career came at the hands of: Alexis Davis, Sarah Kaufman, and Claudia Gadelha. She has fought stiff competition, and is looking to extend her win streak against Moroz.

It should be an incredible fight between two rising strawweights looking to make a statement.
Josh Burkman vs. Patrick Cote
On the Main Card there is an intriguing welterweight matchup between two aging heroes. Patrick Cote, a local Canadian, is fighting in his thirty first contest, and Josh Burkman, who is competing in his thirty ninth. Josh Burkman is coming off a loss to Hector Lombard fought twice in his most recent and lost (which was later turned to a no contest). He needs a win in order to revive his career and is hoping to get that win against Cote.

Burkman is the typical mixed martial arts journeyman, and has fought in multiple organizations. He is looking to get a big win in the UFC in order to keep his career moving forward. He is taking on native Canadian Patrick Cote. This fight may possibly be Cote’s last hurrah at thirty five years of age, he is hoping to end it in startling fashion against Burkman.

Overall this fight will be a fast paced, and high energy fight between two men who are incredible mixed martial artists who are very experienced. Enjoy the UFC Saskatoon everyone.
