UFC on Fox 20: MMA Latest News Post Fight Bonuses

Published

on

The UFC returned to Chicago, Illinois tonight, and they delivered! The card aired free on Fox television and was headlined by a Women’s Bantamweight contender fight between former Champion Holly Holm and Valentina Shevchenko .In total, we only saw four out of eleven fights end with a stoppage, however; the majority of the fights that went to decision ended up being barnburners! As per usual, the bonuses have no precedence over what the UFC has/will award and is voted on solely by the contributors from MMA Latest.

Fight Of The Night: Jason Knight vs. Jim Alers

Given the extreme talent on this card, very few had picked this bout for fight of the night which is too bad because these two delivered from the get go! Alers set the pressure early in the first round, and ended up doing some damage early to Knight cutting him open badly. However, Knight was able to score a few crucial takedowns to edge out round one. Round two continued the action packed bout as the two began to trade early on, even at times taunting the other fighter. Knight continued to bleed but he was able to deal some damage himself in the second round cutting open under the eye of Alers. Alers scored a short takedown but it was short lived, Knight got up relatively easy and earned himself the round. Alers was able to answer in the third after scoring another takedown, he was not able to deal much damage as Knight was able to escape again, they traded a few big bows towards the end of the round but it wasn’t enough to earn either the finish. Knight edged out Alers via Split Decision in a hard fought bout, earning both of them the UFC and MMA Latest News Fight of the Night!

Performance Of The Night (Submission): Felice Herrig vs. Kailin Curran

This was a make or break fight for both Women in the always entertaining Strawweight division, and it was Felice Herrig who stepped up to the plate. Felice had taken a lot of time off to both train for the hit series American Ninja Warrior and to refine some of the skills in her game, and it showed. Curran was able to catch Herrig early with a kick, but Felice was able to take advantage of it and scored an excellent takedown. She effortlessly gained Curran’s back and she sank in the rear Naked Choke. Curran battled it valiantly but ultimately was forced to tap in the first round. Herrig got back in the winning column after a layoff and she earned bot the UFC Performance of the Night bonus and MMA Latest News bonus!

Performance Of The Night (DEC): Valentina Shevchenko vs. Holly Holm

Just when we thought the Women’s Bantamweight title picture could not get any cloudier; we get another upset! At UFC 200 the first girl to beat Holly Holm in her professional MMA career, Miesha Tate, lost the belt she won to underdog challenger Amanda Nunes. Ronda Rousey is nowhere to be seen, Cyborg is in the UFC, and Valentina Shevchenko did the unthinkable and beat Holly Holm at UFC on Fox 20. The Bantamweight division is wide open right now and it was Shevchenko who staked her claim. She did a masterful job tonight, she is a dangerous striker herself and faced a dangerously good striker in Holm, and she beat her at her game. The first round was all Holm as she dropped Shevchenko with a huge shot, but from that point forward Shevchenko got into a rhythm. She was able to pick Holly apart for the greater of the last for rounds, her movement was on point, as were her counters, putting Holm just out of her reach making her come short on the majority of her strikes. The real damage from Shevchenko was dealt via her counters, after making Holly miss, she made her pay and it worked out for Shevchenko as she wins via decision. This clearly was the biggest win in Shevchenko’s career both professionally and emotionally, as during her camp her coach was the victim of a shooting taking bullets to protect his fighter, he survived the ordeal and instructed Shevchenko to not withdraw from the bout; his advice paid off!

Exclusive: Derek Brunson: “Anderson was definitely a little lubed up”

Published

on

Derek Brunson fought Anderson Silva back in February of this year, at UFC 208. Brunson would go on to lose the fight by controversial unanimous decision. However, the controversies didn’t stop at the questionable decision, Brunson also claims Silva was greasing during the fight. The Wilmington, North Carolina native, posted about it on Twitter a few days ago:

Speaking with MMA Latest, Brunson explained why he believes Silva was greasing during the fight. “Anderson was definitely a little lubed up. Every time I grabbed him he was just slipping out of everything, and his takedown defense was really good that night. I was definitely curious to know why he was very slippery, which I definitely think he had some kind of substance on his body. He knows I’m a wrestler obviously, he’s an old, savvy veteran, so he was definitely trying to play all the rules and be very strategic, and make it harder for a wrestler to grab him.”

Brunson is set to face Lyoto Machida come October 28, when asked about whether he was worried about Machida greasing, considering Gegard Mousasi accused him of doing so in their fight, Brunson admitted he wasn’t too worried.

Well I’m not too worried, but like I said, I put it out there because I know they’re friends and I know, obviously, that’s kind of what the guys do when they know they’re fighting a wrestler. They want to lube their body up really good to make it hard to grab hold, Anderson did a great job defending my takedowns. It’s because he was all greased up so he was able to stop a lot of them. When I grab guys in the clinch, it’s very tough for them to get away and I’m pretty good with my Greco takedown. He was pretty much pulling through my clinch when I had a tight grip on him and if you have some kind of substance on your body it’s easy to pull them.”

Neither Silva nor his management have commented on the greasing allegations. Anderson Silva makes his return against Kelvin Gastelum later this year, in China. While Brunson makes his return to the Octagon on October 28th, in Brazil, where he looks to add Lyoto Machida’s name to his impressive list of victories.

Ovince Saint Preux Steps in to Face Corey Anderson at UFC 217

Published

on

UFC 217 just got even more interesting. Earlier this week, Patrick Cummins pulled out of his light heavyweight matchup with Corey Anderson due to a Staph infection. Corey “Overtime” Anderson was not happy with his opponents decision, even calling out his opponent on Instagram asking how Cummins could, “call it quits so far from fight night”.

The UFC left Anderson on the card, and he found an opponent through the magic of Twitter. Ovince Saint Preux tweeted out directly to Anderson stating:

It didn’t take long for Anderson to respond agreeing to the fight, tagging Mick Maynard and Dana White in his response.

Only a few short hours later, the fight announcement came from the official UFC twitter account.

This top 10 Light Heavyweight matchup should add to an already amazing card coming in November at Madison Square Garden. Saint Preux is coming off of back to back wins both due to the very rare von flue choke, he finds himself ranked #7th in the latest edition of the 205-pound rankings. Corey “Overtime” Anderson is 4-2 in his last 6 fights, but is coming off a brutal first round knockout loss to Jimi Manuwa in March.

With such a exciting fight added to this card, what do you see happening November 4th?  Will Corey Anderson bounce back and look to jump into the top 5 of the rankings, or will Ovince Saint Preux go for a third straight von flue choke? Let us know.
